Welcome to the Saint Paul Public Schools' career planning website. This website opened its doors in the fall of 2003 and is updated continuously. It is a large site but we want every visitor to feel at home and use the resources within this site as you plan for your future. It is like a "Target" Store...just about everything you need is here to help you develop a compelling plan for your future. The website is divided into two parts. The first part is what we call the "tools' side of the website. You are currently in the "tools" side. In this side you will find the resources (tools) that will help you to complete the other side of the site which is your personalized Six Year Plan. The Six Year Plan is a graduation requirement for the classes of 2008 and beyond.

Students can link directly to their "Six Year Plan" log in page at any time by clicking on the blue Six Year Plan logo on the left of any screen. Get your student User Name and Password from your school and record it in a safe place. Only students can enter information into their plan but others can view and comment about it. Vistitors to this site can view a demo site by using ladams005 as the User Name and w555ja as the Password. This demo site provides a sample of how students use the Six Year Plan.

Students can also log into their "Student Portal" by clicking on the student portal logo on the right side of any screen.  You

One of the goals of this website funded through the Bush Foundation is to create a culture of "high aspirations" for all students and to help motivate students through association with career and life planning. Most people spend about 86,000 hours working at a job during their lifetime. Make sure you choose the right career by planning ahead now.

Dreams are a big part of choosing a job you will like. This tool will become an integral part of each students' electronic portfolio and plan for the future. It will help each student to think, dream and develop an educational and career plan to help them reach their goals. It will also allow other student stakeholders such as parents, teachers, and counselors access to useful and individualized information: How students are doing in school, "dinner table" discussion items, class history, links to helpful sites on financial aid, selecting a college or program of study, interest inventories, post-secondary enrollment options, how to plan for the future, progress toward graduation, resume writing, and much more. This new website will assist students and parents to connect high school to their future and to make important
information readily available.

It was designed to meet National Career Development Guidelines in the following categories: Self Knowledge, Educational and Occupational Knowledge, and Career Planning.

a "Six Year Plan?

If you dont know where youre going, any road will get you there.

Today, many of us live hectic, highly stressful lives. Nothing seems permanent. Nothing can be taken for granted not our jobs, accumulated financial assets, not even our closest relationships.

So, why plan for a future when everything seems so up for grabs? Why not just fly by the seat of our pants, making decisions as they come, one-by-one? Simply because, even if such an
Ill-take-things-as-they-come life orientation worked at one time, it no longer does.

In the current setting, without a compelling vision of our desired future and a detailed plan to get there, we are likely to take any fork-in-the-road that seems appealing at the moment . . . or we get bogged down, frustrated with our lives, without a plan for our future.

Today, we usually need long lead-times to upgrade our interests, skills, and competencies just to stay current and competitive in the workplace. Flying by the seat of our pants simply doesn't work.

Thats why, especially today, an up-to-date compelling vision of our desired future and a detailed plan to get there are critical necessities for a successful, personally rewarding lifes journey. This website and the Six Year Plan will help you in your efforts.

To use this website just click on either the "Planning for High School" or the "Planning for After High School" tabs at the top of the page. These links also contain a list of sub-menu

items listed as sections on the right of the page. Clicking on any
of these will bring you to an explanatory page to help guide you. The Site Map menu item provides you with another navigational tool. Clicking on the pictures will also take you to interesting sites.

Every senior high student will eventually be expected and taught how to use this site to help prepare for the future. Having a "Six Year Plan" is a graduation requirement beginnig with the class of 2008. You will find many useful tools within these sites that will help you connect the
dots........... to your future. Some of the menu items including "My Six Year Plan", Bridges, and the Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) require separate passwords to enter the site. Every student will receive a
password to access their Six Year Plan. Other necessary passwords can be obtained from the student's guidance office.

What is success anyway?

Herman J. Russell, CEO of H.J. Russell & Co. in Atlanta, agrees. ''Success," he says, ''comes not from doing the impossible, but from doing the possible everyday. We only need to succeed with single acts every day, each day, to have a successful life. It's a long, slow
grind.''

After years of research and exhausting interviews into the subject, I have come to know what success is and isn't. Accordingly,

success is:
An attitude and a matter of choice.

It is available to all who will take charge of the direction of their lives. The path to success leads through service.

Success is the process of learning and growing. It requires that the individual step out of line, away from the pack, and march to the beat of a different, sometimes distant, drummer.

Success is knowing yourself and what you want.

Success is born by the pursuit of a goal or an ideal which will benefit others as easily as the dreamer.

Success cannot be conferred upon others.

Success can only be earned through individual initiative.

Succeeding means risk taking, courage, faith and commitment. Frederick Douglass was correct: success is born of struggle.

Success demands the use of whatever abilities and talents are available. It decays on the 40 hour work week. It is derived from labors of love. The achiever will be most successful doing what he or she truly enjoys.

Some indicators of success come from the desire to leave behind some great work that will survive or endure--in other words, permanence.
